Whitney Western Art Museum. Introduction.
Welcome, Tour the Whitney Western Art Museum.
Welcome to the Whitney Western Art Museum. The American West has been a source of inspiration for artists from the early 19th century to the present. The Whitney’s collection represents this romance with the West in all its forms— paintings, sculptures, and prints by early artist-explorers to those by artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
In this collection you will find celebrations of icons—cowboys, Indians, mountains, plains, and wildlife—as well as probing explorations of the mythology and stereotypes of the West. You will come away with a deeper appreciation of the region’s central role in American history and art history.
Some of the commentaries on today’s tour have expanded visual descriptions, to highlight fine details the eye may otherwise miss. Others include images, poetry, song, and video, oftentimes featuring the artists themselves. Look down at your screen to see the visuals when you hear this sound.
Your guides are Mindy Besaw, former Margaret and Dick Scarlett Curator of Western American Art, and Peter Hassrick, Director Emeritus and Senior Scholar. Enjoy your tour!
